Rounds 5 & 6 - Loton Park
Another very good number of entries from our Championship Contenders who joined those attending for the start of the British Championship.
What a challenging weekend it proved, with heavy rain for most of Saturday and slightly kinder conditions on Sunday.
We probably had a record number of ‘red flags’ across both days. On Saturday the track conditions were difficult and I appreciate that on Sunday things ‘were tricky’, but some of the delays and incidents on Sunday caused by potentially avoidable driver errors ?
For those not involved in the incidents but who were criticising the slow running of the event, I trust that you would wish for the best care and attention being given when you are injured? The paramedics, rescue and recovery crews give their best and they always do.
I was also aware of unacceptable levels of abuse from some attendees directed at several of the event organisers, officials and marshals. These people are volunteers and they are there for the benefit of the competitors.
Adding angst and bad feelings in difficult conditions is unacceptable and I suggest that certain competitors and their supporters need to reflect on their attitudes in future and think more of others.
Despite the conditions, we had some fine competition. Both of the ‘Top Ten’ run offs were won by Wallace Menzies, in the first Wallace was followed by Alex Summers, Scott Moran, Will Hall, Trevor Willis and Dave Uren.
In the second, Sean Gould finished second ahead of Alex, then Will, Scott, Trevor and Dave.
Wallace’s time of 43.55 seconds on the final run of the day was the fourth fastest recorded at Loton Park, 0.28 off Sean’s best of 43.27 (set in September 2019). Scott is in this mix with times of 43.52 and 43.53 in the Gould GR61X.
Note that times from 2020 are not counted.
Eventually, proceedings were all finished just before 6.30pm.
