Some Liked It Hot! Rounds 9 & 10
The stand-alone BMTR Midland ‘National’ Hill Climb Championship meeting held on June 13th at Loton Park gave us Mediterranean weather without airport delays and quarantine hotels, two ballistically quick run- offs and a new hill record.
Both Rounds 9 and 10 of the Championship took place under hot conditions.
Trevor Willis in the OMS 28, notched up a win in the Round 9, pre-lunch run-off with a time of 44.44 which was just 1/100th of a second quicker than Sean Gould. The morning ran so smoothly that we even had the luxury of a long lunch break before the afternoon runs began.
With great conditions it was always possible that the hill record might be beaten and so it proved as on the last run of the second Top-Ten Challenge run-off, Sean Gould obliged – beating his own outright record with a time of 43.18 seconds. Trevor took the runner-up spot with a 44.31 and David Warburton, who took third place in both run-offs, was awarded Midland ‘Man of the Meeting’.
In the classes Rick Leddy improved the record in the new, for this year, A(iii) for 4-wheel-drive Road-going cars in his Audi TTRS. Paul Howells has now won his class on every occasion so leads the ‘BMTR Motorsport Tyres’ series, whilst in the ‘Wynn Developments’ Top Ten Challenge Trevor leads from Sean and Alex Summers.
The Porsche Club GB Sprint and Hillclimb series also joined us for their annual Loton Park weekend, so we were treated to some fine German engineering in competitive action. Tim Barber in his Porsche 996 GT3 took the honours on both Saturday and Sunday, his best time being a 55.66 run.
